Aleksandr Petrov - animations

You probably know how computer animaion is made - first, the models and scenes are designed and then programmed to act in certain way. What about classic animation? The background is painted and characters are drawn on glass tiles. Each seperately, togheder they make it looks like it's moving. Time-consuming, huh?
Now, Mr. Petrov took time-consumption on a whole new level. He paints each scene. Seperately. With oil paints. He uses his fingertips instead of a paintbrush on different glass sheets positioned on multiple levels, each covered with slow-drying oil paints. After photographing each frame painted on the glass sheets, which was four times larger than the usual A4-sized canvas, he had to slightly modify the painting for the next frame and so on.
"Old Man And The Sea", based on novel by Ernest Hemingway, is about 20 minutes long and took two years to complete. More than 29000 frames. And that's why I love the Russians.

"Destino" - Salvador Dali and Walt Disney

In 1945 Spanish artist Salvador Dali (you know, melting clocks and stuff) and Walt Disney began their collaboration on a short animated movie - "Destino". Because of post-war financial troubles the project was to be soon abandoned. Its remains were found in 1999 by Disney's nephew. A group of 25 animators encrypted Dali's storyboards (with help of his and Gala's diaries) and began working on it. The result is mostly traditional animation with a hint of computer animation.

Simon Dale's natural house

So, there's this average guy who has the same name as I (which makes him already awesome) and build a house all by himself for £3,000. Perfectly normal. Except for the name part, of course.
Mr. Dale (with totally no experience in building, carpentry or whatever) took a hammer and a saw into Welsh woods and began gathering wood with his family. The owner of the forest gave them a piece of land in exchange for looking after these grounds. That was the plan:

Even if you're not a grunge fan, you must've heardat least one Nirvana track. Angst and iconic 90s hairstyle, combined with heavy tune and great album art.

This was 1991 and now this baby, Spacer Elden (always introduced as the "Nirvana baby") studies fine arts at Pasadena, California. Before 20th anniversary edition of "Nevermind" was released, he wished to recreate this classic cover. Same pool, same person. Don't know about the note. And the pants. Yeah, shame.

Space Invaders

On my trip to Paris this summer I've seen many awesome things. People storming bookstores. Acrylic sculptures of terriers for 40 Euro. Special discount for a sex club entrance.
Amongst these things there was curious kind of street art - mosaics resembling a pixel alien, as seen in the "Space Invaders" game. People who had Nokias back in early 2000's know what I mean. (The game itself originated in 70's in Japan) Those were hidden from public eyesight, avaiable only for those who looked up or went to places normally avoided.

I've seen some kind of guide mentioning those with one sentence only.But after I got home I accidentally found out that those mosaics are not typically parisian thing - they were created by a worldwide movement which adopted the name and the logo. The Space Invaders.

I couldn't find much about them than they wanted me to know - an international art movement with people involved all over the world, few exhibitions, that's all. The cube art I have presented few days ago was made by them. Ok, let the image take over from now.

P.S.: anyone near me interested in starting a local SI division? ;)

Mr. Lintgen likes vinyl recordings. Very much. Like, he is able to tell you what kind of recording that is merely LOOKING at it. Yup. This man looks at physical construction (vinyl rows) in specific places and from that point, he is able to recreate this part. Nature never ceases to amaze me. Well, maybe when I see my biology textbook and the amount of work before me I'm not THAT amazed, but there are still really awesome thing out there. For example, the beetles of Waitomo.
Waitomo is a cavern in New Zealand that was thought to be just a Maori legend. Well, it's not. Thousands of bugs light up the celling above your head when you slowly drift in your boat...

What are we still doing here? Who's up for a trip to NZ?

This guy's picture should be in dictionaries, right next to the definiotion of "dedication". A supermarket worker from San Francisco spent 36 years of his life on creating this astonishing sculpture. The work depicts famous views as well as history of author's life.
Some people write diaries to keep the record of their lives. Some (like I have just started) ink it on their bodies. Others spend 126 days spread over 36 years and over 100,000 toothpicks on something like that.

Too Hot To Handle?

Okay, so today I won't be writing about art or design. This post will be about physics.
"Physics? WTF?!"
Yup, physics. I do not like pages of equations either, but I love general science and interesting questions. Besides, it is my blog, so if you don't like what I write then fuck you.

As for now, I am pretty ill - so I lie in bed, browsing shit on my laptop and drinking tea. But what happens when I drink all the tea? Of course, I have to make myself a fresh cup. And freshly made tea tends to be... hot. I started wondering - what's the most effective way to cool it down to drinkable temperature? Research time!

1. Add milk. It sounds weird but it's supposed to work. Some even advise to add iced milk. The process of freezing will denature protein structures, but stirring it will work. Cyrogenically froze milk will not require that, as protein chains will reamain stable. You need liquid nitrogen for that. However, I like my tea with just a hint of milk, so it's not enough for me.

2. Use liquid nitrogen to freeze it in a matter of seconds. Very effective. If you like frozen tea lollipops, it'll work like charm for you.

3. Use different mug. Bigger is better. Wider upper parts provide more evaporation. Metal mugs radiate the heat, china/porcelain isolate it.

4. Saucering. You can greatly increase the evaporating surface by pouring your drink from one mug (or a saucer, hence the name) into another.

5. Put a spoon in the mug. Metal will conduct the heat and release it, therefore cooling the drink. Not a lot, but still.

6. Stirr the tea. Whirpool will create energy, heating your drink, but the evaporating surface will increase and that will result in quicker cooling.

7. Add ice cubes. Easy, intuitative. If don't like the taste of tea when cubes melt (I don't) - make ice cubes out of tea. Did you know that hotter liquids freeze faster than cold ones?

8. Put the mug in the freezer. You need to be careful with that method or contents of your freezer will melt and turn bad.

9. Put the mug in a bowl with cold, salted water.

10. My favourite method - use a shaker filled with ice (or milk or tea ice) and... shake. Really fast!

It seems like you have found your way to this blog. In this paragrapf I will try to answer the "WTF" question.
As the sub-title suggests, toginis is subjective choice of paintings, installations, design pieces, architecture and anything else I find cool. This blog is kind of notepad for me - only paperless, therefore saving forests and shit. And I can show off.

Zdaje się, że koleje życia tym razem zesłały Cię na ten blog. Tutaj postaram się wyjaśnić, o co chodzi.
Otóż, jak sam podtytuł wskazuje, toginis jest subiektywnym wyborem obrazów, instalacji, designu, architektury i wszystkiego innego, co mi się spodoba. Blog ten pełni funkcję czegoś w rodzaju mojego notatnika - po prostu zamiast drukować obrazki i wklejać je do brulionu, oszczędzam Puszczę Amazońską i wklejam je tu. Poza losem Puszczy Amazońskiej (która leży mi na sercu jak, powiedzmy, los populacji ameb w Oceanie Indyjskim) mogę się pochwalić fajnymi rzeczami, które tu zgromadziłem.
Co jakiś czas wrzucę tu jakieś swoje dzieła, ale nie przejmujcie się, nie trzeba ich oglądać.

Skąd nazwa?
Zakładając bloga dobrych pięć minut głowiłem się nad dobrą nazwą. Wszystkie chwytliwe, jak "bigtits.blogspot.com", były już zajęte (gdyby nie były, statystyki wejść skoczyłyby o 500%). Autor poszedł zrobić sobie herbatę i machnąć parę razy pędzlem, po czym wrócił i przepisał ciąg liter z captcha. Kojarzy się z torysami, ale nie brzmi źle, i tak już zostało.

Dlaczego po angielsku?
Bo chociaż większość osób, które tu zajrzą, skieruję osobiście i te osoby w większości posługują się językiem polskim, to czasem może tu trafić ktoś z innego zakątka świata. Internet, moi drodzy, pozwala na poznawanie wielu ciekawych osób. No i zboczeńców. Tych jest nawet więcej.

Pytania i odpowiedzi będę dopisywał w miarę pojawiania się nowych pytań i odpowiedzi.
